Here's what's coming up in our 14th season !
Oct 2, "Mozart and Salieri and Songs of India"
We present the one-act opera in two scenes, Mozart and Salieri, by Rimsky-Korsakov, performed by world-famous Russian Baritone Bass, Nikita Storojev (Salieri), and Chicago tenor, Michael Burgess (Mozart). The opera will be staged with period furniture and costumes, and presented in Russian with English surtitles.
The second part of the concert is a first-time partnership with the local Indian community, presenting a 45 minute concert of classical Indian music, presented by Indian singer Sujata Venkateswar, as well as a taste of Indian pop. At the end of the show, students from local Indian dance schools will perform.
Dec 11, "Golden Fingers and Golden Toes"
Golden Fingers, an international group of six pianists hailing from Mexico, Russia, Georgia, Belorussia, Germany and the United States, will present an exciting, eccentric program of pianists in different combinations, culminating with Liszt’s “Hexameron” for six pianists
Golden Toes, four classical ballet dancers from New York, will present the WORLD PREMIER of the new ballet “Fables,” created by world-famous ballet choreographer, Elena Kunikova. The ballet will include interludes, with narrator and pianists.
Jan 22, "Beethoven in the Style of Jazz"
Partnering with the San Antonio Symphony in the City-Wide Beethoven Festival, we present an international collaboration between Russian-trained musicians Valery Grokhovski, piano, Mark Cheikhet, violin, and Boris Andrianov, cello, and local jazz musicians, Adam Booker, bass, and Darren Kuper, drums; all brilliant musicians with the rare ability to switch flawlessly from Classical to Jazz, and back again. The program includes unique jazz interpretations of works by Beethoven and Bach, as well as Bach’s Piano Concerto in D minor, BWV 1052, and Violin Concerto BMV 1041.In celebration of Black History Month, this jazz offering features internationally known pianist and composer, Geri Allen. Hailed as “a jazz pianist who dares to follow an unmarked road” (The New York Times), pianist/composer Geri Allen is a true original. Rhythmically subtle yet startlingly provocative, Allen respects the jazz tradition, but refuses to be bound by it, and her original works journey into constantly adventurous areas, always seeking out new musical avenues. Since 1982, she has recorded, performed or collaborated with artists as diverse as Ravi Coltrane, Dianne Reeves, Bill Cosby, Jimmy Cobb, Betty Carter, and Mary Wilson and the Supremes.
This program will feature world-famous folkloric ensemble, Gibaro de Puerto Rico, known for their dynamic, fiery performances. The narrated musical historic presentation, staged with period costumes, will take us on a Caribbean voyage through the history of Latin music from its roots to the present. The first half will explore the influence of Taíno, Spanish, and African cultures, through Puerto Rican folkloric music that will make you sing and dance in your seats. The second half of the concert, Gibaro de Puerto Rico will bring us to the present time, with Caribbean mambo, merengue, plena and salsa. San Antonio's renowned choreographer and the world-famous salsa master, Lee Rios, and his dancers will join for the ultimate salsa performance!
Programs and artists are subject to change without notice.
